STAYING SAFE IS A RIGHT

THE PRESENT

The popularity of online rental services and hospital management has really shot up this last decade, especially among millennials. Tourists want the most affordable hotel bookings (I mean the ones that perfectly fits in their budget such that no one is breaking a sweat paying it). Online adverts keep on flooding social media which clearly resonates the idea holiday makers and others interested in rental services perceive. The challenge now is how to get a home which is truly yours without having to fall any scams or having to pay through middle men to secure one.
Otis Red arrived to her new home to find someone else’s clothes churning in the washing machine and her dishes stored away. Dogs and a cat roamed Otis’s home, and two ladies were talking inside. A couch rested on the back porch.
Another family was moving in
“I said ‘What are you doing in my house?’” Otis said.
“It became clear to me what happened.”
The would-be tenants had been scammed.

Otis is just one of the numerous people who have fallen prey to rental scam on the internet. The ordeal of searching for an apartment is inevitable. The search, the competition, the upfront money …..Most renters stop frequently moving for these reasons. But sometimes the rental process goes from merely aggravating to actually illegal. While a majority of rental listings are legitimate, rental scams are out there, and not always easy to spot.
According to Statista 2018, real estate fraud complaints stood at 9955, second only to auto fraud.
The 38-year-old victim, May Haggles, said she moved to the area from Boualle with her husband for better job prospects. Haggles responded to a post in a Facebook group from a woman named Henri Hemsworth offering homes for rent.  Haggles had sent her two small children to stay with family in Brondton while she looked for a place to live while staying with a friend in Beaufort. The newly renovated, three-bedroom home advertised for $850 per month seemed ideal.  “I was so crushed when I found out it was a scam,” Haggles said.
“... Finding a place to live is hard when you need something you can afford and still raise a family adequately.”  Otis bought the house in October but had been staying in her previous house while waiting for it to sell. She returned from a 10-day vacation and visited her new home in Pigeon Point to check the pipes after the recent freeze.  She drove up to see the door to her shed at the end of the driveway open and unfamiliar items inside. Two women were in the house, and one began to cry when it was clear Otis owned the home, Otis said.  Otis thought the home had been watched during renovation work before she bought the home, when a key had been kept under the plastic cover of an outdoor electrical outlet. The “landlord” had advertised the home as furnished and described items Otis had already moved into the home, including books and kitchen stools.
Otis eventually wired the scammers $1,150 per a fake lease agreement and was told the keys would be mailed. The suspected scammer then told the victim the delivery driver with the keys had been arrested and the truck impounded.  Haggles was told the back door was open and that she could begin moving her things in.  “She made it very believable,” Haggles said.  When Otis arrived, small dogs were running in the house, a cat was perched on the running washing machine and food was cooking on Otis’s stove. A flat screen television from one of Otis’s bedrooms had been moved to the mantle.
While the future of the prospective homeowner hangs in the balance, we can look at ours with a lot of hope as technological advancements have made it possible to do things in the comfort of our palms which could not be imagined a decade ago. We are in the age of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence. There seems to be a way out of this debacle, one that combines both blockchain technology and artificial intelligence algorithm. The CryptoBnB is making this a realistic possibility.
